Darrell Spears, lead housing inspector
Housing Inspection Services, Regulatory Services Department
Regulatory Services Director Noah Schuchman nominated Spears for continuing to be a happy, positive role model in the midst of multiple major changes at work (a new worksite and ELMS training and implementation):
“Spears is vocal about recognizing both the challenges and the positive outcomes with these major changes and has, without prompting, advocated on behalf of them. In addition, Spears is consistently friendly, sociable and can be counted on to both laugh and make others laugh with his enthusiasm for both the people he works with and the work they do.
“Spears was recently promoted to a lead position and has heartily embraced the role, taking seriously his responsibility to mentor younger, less experienced staff. He goes out of his way to share his experiences and serve as a resource for others. Spears’ example is also an important one for his peers and he leads by example, including calling out problems when he sees them and engaging with peers to encourage them to approach their work positively.
“Spears also volunteers to participate on the workplace standards committee, has been designated to work with a consultant hired by the department and works with management on recommending ordinance changes to modernize and standardize the City's code related to inspections. All of these things are being done on top of his normal workload.”
