Get the tools, resources and support you need to manage a diverse workforce and promote equity and fairness in hiring. Human Resources offers Supervisor U learning and development courses specifically designed for City supervisors and managers regardless of their titles or levels within the organization. Take these courses if your job responsibilities include hiring, directing the work of others, and ensuring others have the resources and support to be productive. 

The courses aim to align City workforce practices with the City’s value of creating fair and just opportunities and outcomes for all. City leaders and supervisors provided input on the topics and helped shape course content.


  • Supervising a diverse workforce: Practical tools and techniques for supervising a diverse workforce gained through an increased understanding of one’s own identity as well as the ways culture and bias play out.
    Time commitment: One half-day class.
    Date: Feb. 21.
  • Principles of effective supervision: Especially for newly promoted supervisors or supervisors new to the City, this class reviews skills needed to meet everyday people management challenges. Topics include supervisory responsibilities at the City, City policies, legal issues, management style, communication skills, techniques for motivating employees, delegation, and managing performance.
    Time commitment: Four days.
    Dates: March 2, March 16, March 30 and April 13.
  • Cultural intelligence in hiring: For hiring managers. Tools and techniques to help manage unconscious bias in the hiring process.
    Time commitment: Two half-day classes.
    Dates: March 7 and March 14.]
