Get to know Sean Skibbie
Q. How would you describe your leadership style?
A. In this position, I want to make sure the Contract Compliance Division is meeting the needs of the City and its residents. I want staff to feel empowered and engaged, because I think we can accomplish more together. So my role is to give clear objectives, seek excellence, support the team and make sure we are holding ourselves accountable to a high standard. In turn, I expect staff to be engaged and to do their best to help the division, the City and themselves continuously improve.
Q. What interested you the most about working for the City?
A. I was drawn to this position because it gave me a chance to work in three different areas I am passionate about: helping minority-and women-owned firms secure contracts, increasing workforce diversity, and ensuring employees are getting paid what they’re owed under the law. I also love working here because Minneapolis is not just my employer; it’s my community and my home.
Q. What’s your favorite place for lunch in Minneapolis?
A. I cannot pick just one! Hell’s Kitchen, Vellee Deli, Seward Café and Tiny Diner are all favorites.
Q. What music are you listening to lately?
A. Whatever is playing on The Current.
Q. Do you have any favorite quotes?
A. I have a few quotes that I really like. Martin Luther King Jr. has several good ones; my favorite is probably about service: “Everybody can be great … because anybody can serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love.”
Q. What’s your favorite movie?
A. The Shawshank Redemption.
