Bridge Maintenance and Repair General Foreman Dennis Thoreson nominated the team for discovering a car crash victim and helping save the man’s life:
“On the morning of Tuesday, Dec. 27, Ben White from the Street Bridge Maintenance and Repair Division noticed that some of the wood fencing on the riverbank side of West River Road near 26th Street had been broken. White, Clayton Ternes and Crew Leader Tim Greene looked over the edge and noticed trees had been run down and some car parts where all around, but they couldn’t see a vehicle.
“Greene called me, and I told them to drive to other side of the river to see if they could get a better view. Upon arrival, they could now see a car at the bottom of the bank. They returned to the scene to find a way down to see if anyone was in the car. It was a steep, treacherous and icy slope.
“After descending some 120 feet down to the river, they could hear someone crying out for help once they were within about 30 feet of the car. Eventually they found a man lying on the ground outside the car. After calling 911, they took off their coats and gloves and put them on the man to try to warm him up until the Fire Department arrived. The man was okay, and taken by Fire for medical treatment.
“The division then coordinated with the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board to rent a large crane and eventually lift the destroyed vehicle from the bank.
“Who knows how long the man may have waited down there and what may have happened to him had this team not been so observant and reacted appropriately to the situation.”
