North STAR Awards

North STARs are awarded to outstanding leaders. The North STAR winner is:

Janine Ryan, manager

Customer Service Representative Rhonda Edwards nominated Ryan for her inclusive, understanding leadership:

“Any time any one of us has an idea or suggestion, Ryan always listens. Really listens. Sometimes she will test out the idea or suggestions to see if they would work or not. If she doesn’t think it is a good idea, she will tell you why.

“Ryan never talks down to anyone. She always talks with respect to us. If she has an issue that she needs to discuss with one of us, she does it in private — she doesn’t blast the issues across the whole team.

“Ryan will sit at the permit counter with the customer service representatives to help with permits when we are falling behind … She will sit out there with us and crack jokes with us, on us and take them from us. She always tries to include everyone in the conversation.

“When I have a difficult customer, Ryan has always apologized for their actions toward me and offered to help diffuse the situation.

“Sitting at the front desk, I am able to see everything down the hall. So many times I have watched Ryan come out and see someone in the hall that has that ‘lost puppy’ look on their face and help them figure out where they need to go.

“As we were getting ready for the ELMS software to go live, we had two days that we could not use the computers at all. We were doing cleanup, and Ryan helped. After the cleanup, she took the whole staff to a very nice sit-down lunch.

“On our go-live day, Ryan did not stay in the back in her office; she was out front helping navigate the customers and any glitches that came up. She stayed in the lobby area and made sure the customer service representatives had everything we needed, and if we did not, she got whatever we needed.

“Ryan has kept up on the glitches we have had in ELMS and notifies us as soon as she gets an update whether the problem was fixed or in progress. If there is a new procedure on doing something, we are notified right away. She does not wait to get us the information.”
