North STAR Awards

North STARs are awarded to outstanding leaders. The North STAR winner is:

Clara Schmit-Gonzalez, director
Code Compliance and Traffic Control, Regulatory Services                         

The Code Compliance and Traffic Control team nominated Schmit-Gonzalez for how much she cares about her team and how passionate she is about her job:

“Over the course of her time as director, Schmit-Gonzalez has made strides working with the community, made partnerships with external stakeholders and supported staff development. She recognizes the barriers we as traffic agents face, and she alleviates those by:

“Focusing on staff development, Schmit-Gonzalez has been an advocate for us to attend training not only for personal development, but for the department. We have been able to attend trainings on facilitation, state driving courses and first aid. In addition to development, Schmit-Gonzalez has been working on improving the technology we use while in the field and has brought in alternative methods of transportation for us in order to do our jobs efficiently. She also is conscientious of our schedules and has worked on accommodating coverage for events and anticipated traffic flow in a timely fashion. One last important note is that she was able to get us reclassified as she recognized we are more than agents, we are ambassadors for the City and for Regulatory Services.

“Communication is a strong suit for Schmit-Gonzalez. Working in a division where shifts are 18 hours, she always manages to inform us of any schedule changes, events, anticipated construction and important policy or procedural updates in a timely manner. She has made communicating with the community a priority. She has attended community meetings and created radio ads to educate people on parking in a snow emergency zone to prevent their cars from being towed.  

“Schmit-Gonzalez works hard for us and it is proven every day in the work she does to make us excel as a division and for the betterment of the City.”
