Get to know and love tap water: Celebrate Drinking Water Week May 7-13
Public Works Treatment and Distribution Services – Minneapolis Water Works – wants you to understand the importance of clean, safe, high-quality tap water as part of Drinking Water Week May 7-13. This year, the American Water Works Association celebrates Drinking Water Week by recognizing the vital role water plays in our daily lives. This year’s theme is “Your Water – To Know It is to Love It.”
Any measure of a successful society – low mortality rates, economic growth and diversity, productivity and public safety – are in some way related to access to safe water. Minneapolis Water Works, which is celebrating its sesquicentennial this year, wants to emphasize that we are all stewards of the water infrastructure upon which future generations depend. It is calling on all of us to help protect our source waters from pollution, to practice wise water use, and to get involved in water issues by getting to know our water.
From its humble beginnings as a single pump station for fire protection, the division has expanded to provide water to more than 500,000 people in the metro area, including six suburbs and the Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport.
Established in 1881, the American Water Works Association is the largest nonprofit, scientific and educational association dedicated to managing and treating water, the world’s most important resource. With approximately 50,000 members, the association provides solutions to improve public health, protect the environment, strengthen the economy and enhance our quality of life.
