All-gender restrooms coming to City buildings this month

The City is in the process of installing all-gender restrooms in 44 City facilities. The all-gender restrooms are facilities that anyone can use as an additional option. They’re an important part of the City’s efforts to further transgender equity by making sure City policies and services include our transgender community and staff.

All-gender restrooms are an additional facility option for anyone, including:

Starting in May 2017, the all-gender restrooms will start to be added in 44 City facilities, including department offices, fire stations, police precincts, Public Works facilities and City-owned parking ramps. This work involves new signs and, in some cases, adding security locks to doors to 62 restrooms. Most are single-stall restrooms. However, there will be some multi-stall restrooms that would include additional privacy measures.

The all-gender restrooms are in addition to the traditional restrooms. Men’s and women’s restrooms will continue to exist in every City facility. Staff and the public will continue to be able to use the restrooms corresponding to their gender identities.

Opening up these restrooms will take about three weeks to complete. City staff are already planning for inclusive locker room and shower facilities. Also, as buildings are constructed or remodeled for City use, staff will explore accommodating multi-stall, all-gender restrooms and changing rooms.
