Volunteer to mentor an Urban Scholars intern this summer as a network advisor
The Urban Scholars program needs 30 City employees with diverse backgrounds and experiences to mentor undergraduate- and graduate-student interns working for the City this summer. The City seeks the mentors to serve as networking advisors to help Urban Scholars interns build their professional networks.
As a network advisor, you and your Urban Scholars intern will discuss what a professional network looks like; based on the scholar’s career interests, you will provide contacts for colleagues the scholar should meet. This will allow the scholars to take responsibility for connecting with people who work in their field of interest. This is a great opportunity to help students understand how to expand their professional networks.
The Urban Scholars program runs from May 22 to August 11. Volunteers and their Urban Scholars intern should meet twice a month or approximately six times. Meetings can include the initial meeting, Urban Scholars’ group presentations, the end of the program lunch and the recognition ceremony. Urban Scholars staff will provide networking advisors with any resources or help needed throughout the summer.
If you are interested in serving as a networking advisor for an Urban Scholars intern this summer, please contact Brittany Rice at 612-673-2339 or [email protected] or at [email protected] by Friday, May 12.
The networking advisors opportunity is a new pilot under the Urban Scholars mentoring program. Urban Scholars is a highly competitive leadership and professional development summer internship that offers college and graduate students meaningful work experiences, training in leadership skills and exposure to careers in the public sector.
