Mayor Hodges proposes 2018 budget

Mayor Betsy Hodges presented her recommended 2018 budget to the City Council Sept. 12. Council members will consider the budget through early December with final approval of the 2018 budget scheduled Dec. 6.

The budget is rooted in the belief that investment fuels action. These investments include growing the City’s power to combat climate change, getting Minneapolis closer to the day when all residents have a home in the growing city, and continued investment in a system and culture of policing that brings the City closer to ensuring that every single person in Minneapolis feels safe and is safe.

Top highlights of Mayor Hodges’ 2018 budget proposal include:

The $1.4 billion budget proposes a 5.5 percent increase in the property tax levy for 2018, which is consistent with the five-year financial direction that the City Council passed in the 2017 budget. The levy increase will continue to fully fund the historic 20-year parks and streets agreement reached with the Park Board in 2016 and the property tax increases needed to fund it that were codified in City ordinance. The Board of Estimate and Taxation will set the 2018 maximum property tax levies at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 27, in the Council Chamber, Room 317.

The City of Minneapolis has tentatively scheduled two public hearings on the proposed 2018 property tax levy and budget:

6:05 p.m. Nov. 29
Council Chamber, Room 317, City Hall

6:05 p.m. Dec. 6
Council Chamber, Room 317, City Hall
