LOCAL ARTIST TO CREATE ART LOGO FOR CENTRAL AVENUE NORTHEAST COMMERCIAL CORRIDOR
Lori Svedberg's Compass Motif to Adorn Central Avenue(Minneapolis, June 20, 2001) “New Directions,” a compass motif symbolizing the characteristics of Central Avenue in northeast Minneapolis and the surrounding community, has been chosen to represent and promote, through art, the people and businesses along this commercial corridor. The art, by northeast Minneapolis artist Lauri Svedberg, will be identified in a variety of design elements such as banners, signage, monument entry markers, fencing and planters over the course of the revitalization of Central Avenue.
“We are excited that a Northeast artist, Lauri Svedberg, is helping to create an image for our mainstreet, Central Avenue,” said Minneapolis 1st Ward Council Member Paul Ostrow. “This event provides the community an opportunity to recognize the tremendous talent and commitment to the Avenue, which exists in our local artist community. This support and their presence is what makes Northeast such a wonderful place.”
Svedberg is the proprietor of FUNKtional Art Studio and Gallery in northeast Minneapolis and an art teacher at St. Francis High School. Svedberg’s motif was one of 26 entries that responded to the call for the creation of an identifiable logo for Central Avenue through art. The winning entry was judged by a committee of business owners and residents along the commercial corridor.
All 26 entries will be displayed Friday, June 22 through Thursday, June 28 in the storefront windows of New Boston Square located at the corner of 20th and Central Avenue NE. The artwork will be on display in conjunction with the Eastside Community Parade, the second largest community parade in the Twin Cities, which will be held on June 26 along Central Avenue from 28th Avenue to 14th Avenue.
The project was sponsored by the Northeast Economic Development Council, the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design program and the Central Avenue Mainstreet Program.
