City of Minneapolis wins ‘Bicycle Friendly Business’ gold designation award

The League of American Bicyclists honored the City of Minneapolis on March 9 with the Gold Award designation as a Bike Friendly Business during the National Bike Summit in Washington, D.C.

The League’s Bicycle Friendly Business program recognizes employers’ efforts to encourage a more bicycle-friendly and green workplace for employees and customers. Minneapolis was one of only six employers — and the only governmental entity — receiving the gold designation award at the national conference. In all, the league awarded 55 businesses —from restaurants to law firms — with the Bicycle Friendly Business designation in categories ranging from platinum to bronze.

The Bike Friendly Business program was launched in 2008 when the League announced the first 13 designees. The Bicycle Friendly Business program assesses organizations’ success in:

In the past few years, Minneapolis has offered classes to employees on bicycle commuting, bicycling traffic skills for downtown streets and basic bike maintenance. Minneapolis also participates in special bicycling events such as Bike Walk Week. Since 2009, the Department of Health and Family Support has coordinated an internal group to work on how the City can become more supportive of employees who bike and walk to work. Last year, the City also subsidized a portion of the cost for employees to purchase an annual membership in the Nice Ride Minnesota bike sharing program.
