Rybak and the City Council today passed a resolution authorizing the City to enter in agreement with the Minneapolis-St. Paul 2008 Host Committee, in preparation to host the 2008 Republican National Convention. The council authorizes the Mayor’s office to execute a service contract with the host committee. Among other things, the agreement will make the host committee responsible for convention costs that are not covered by federal funding. Before passing the resolution, council committees added measures intended to reaffirm that free speech will not be restricted during the convention and that the agreement would not limit the rights of organized labor. “The 2008 convention is a fantastic opportunity for Minneapolis and St. Paul to show the world what a unique and desirable destination we are,” said Mayor R.T. Rybak. “This keeps us on track toward hosting a successful convention.” City Council President Barbara Johnson said, “We’re all excited that Minneapolis will be in the spotlight, and we want to make sure that we are anticipating our needs well in advance. This agreement puts us in a good place as the planning moves forward.” The resolution passed by council also directs the City Coordinator to form a work group to advise the Chief of Police and City staff working on convention preparations and security plans. # # # Communications Department
