Business Technology Unit

The Business Technology Unit provides behind-the-scenes technological support for the crime-fighting efforts of the rest of the department. These include CAPRS (Computer Assisted Police Records System), our robust records management system. The CAPRS application was developed by the MPD. The database contains police incident and arrest reports from 1990 and stores accident reports for seven years. CAPRS reports may be requested by the public.

The Business Technology Unit is located at:

Minneapolis City Hall, Room 127
350 South 5 th Street
Minneapolis, MN 55415-1389
(612) 673-3670
Fax (612) 673-2619

How to obtain police reports and records

Cases entered into CAPRS are routed electronically to pertinent investigative units. Multiple queries allow officers, investigators and other police personnel to search for specific cases and information. Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) are generated from CAPRS data. In addition, CODEFOR reports utilize CAPRS-generated data to identify crime "hot spots" quickly and divert police resources to them in a coordinated manner.

The unit also oversees of the Mobile Data Computer (MDC) project. Using wireless technology, ruggedized laptop computers are installed in squad cars. MDC's allow in-car entry of police reports directly into the CAPRS database and querying of data. Computer-aided dispatch instructions and automated warrant and driver's license checks are also available through MDC's.

Finally, BTU oversees the department's Internet website and developed and maintains an Intranet website, which provides police related information for MPD employees. It developed and maintains a specialized timekeeping and payroll accounting system. It also manages MPD security for the Criminal Justice Data Network (CJDN), a national database of criminal history records, driver and vehicle records, and missing and wanted person files.
