Business Technology Unit

The Business Technology Unit provides technical support for the crime-fighting efforts of the rest of the department. These include many public safety applications. The department's CAPRS application which contains police incident and arrest reports from 1990 was  replaced by a new records management system (PIMS: Police Information Management System) in 2018.

BTU also oversees the department's Internet and internal websites.  It developed and maintains a specialized timekeeping and payroll accounting system. It also manages MPD security for the Criminal Justice Data Network (CJDN), a national database of criminal history records, driver and vehicle records, and missing and wanted person files.
