Teleserve and Transcription Units
Teleserve Unit:
The Minneapolis Police Department Teleserve Unit is a system for reporting non-emergency crimes that occurred within the city limits of Minneapolis. This does not include suburbs or the Minneapolis/St. Paul airport. This includes cases where the incident occurred some time ago, there is no suspect information and no physical evidence. The basic report types taken are thefts, vandalism/damage to property or vehicle, threats/harassment, and assault. This system was developed to increase the convenience of filing a police report and to increase the availability of police units to respond to events that are in progress or of an emergency nature. If you call 9-1-1 the operator may direct you to call Teleserve. You may also decide to call Teleserve first if no officer is needed at the scene. The Teleserve Unit does not take reports pertaining to stolen cars, car accidents, hit & run accidents, arson, domestic assault, sexual assault, biased crimes, parental kidnapping, burglary of business, apartment, house or duplex and theft from motor vehicles. These reports are taken by the 9-1-1 operators.
Tele-serve is generally open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. If all Teleserve operators are busy or the unit is closed, you can leave a message and someone will call you back. It might take a few days for your call to be returned.
Please call 673-3383 to obtain additional information and procedures in filing a report.
Transcription Unit:
The Mnneapolis Police Department Transcription Unit is where officers dictate their reports and statements of arrests and related work. The transcription personnel enter the information into CAPRS which is the department's data management system. The Transcription personnel are also responsible for the entry of the handwritten documents. These handwritten documents are reports that the officers have taken from crime victims.
