MPD HIGHLIGHTS for the week of 8-14 April, 2008
CITYWIDE TRENDS The MPLS total violent crime rate continues to be lower than last year by 11%.
MPLS has had 11 homicides this year to date. This is a 31% decrease from 16 homicides at this time in 2007. Robberies decreased by 42% this week. The year-to-date decrease is 6% compared to 2007. Aggravated assaults are 16% lower in this year-to-date period. Rape has decreased by 1% to date over last year. Total property crimes decreased by 14% in this year period. 224 weapons have been recovered this year, 19 this week. |

1400 blk E Franklin Av: During midday shift change officers received report of shooting on roof; caller said he’d been shot by someone who was still on roof; officers called on several squads to assist in closing street to traffic, setting up patrol rifle perimeter; officers observed man hanging from edge of roof on NW corner of building then make his way down side of building; officers took him into custody; suspect appeared to have been under influence of narcotics, frothing from mouth; suspect transported to HCMC: Crisis Intervention |
1000 blk Washburn: Shortly before 1:00 am officers noticed speeding car fail to stop for sign, almost struck squad; when officers attempted to stop driver, he accelerated, failed to pull over, then drove to his garage, parked, got out of car, walked away from officers; when officers attempted to take him into custody, he began assaulting both officers; HELP call sounded, responding officers assisted in taking suspect into custody; 1 officer suffered facial injuries, another officer sustained back, wrist injuries: Arrested/ FLEE/ ASSAULT CID investigating |

1st Precinct: The precinct’s second homicide of the year occurred this week and violent crime rates overall remained the same as in this period for 2007. Robberies fell by half this week, making the year-to-date increase over 2007 28%. Proactive work by officers has resulted in 22% fewer aggravated assaults this year over last. Property crimes rose by 15% this week and by 12% this year, due in part by increases in larceny and auto theft. 2nd Precinct: Total violent crime fell by 69% this week, keeping the violent crime rate lower for the year by 28%. Overall property crime remains lower over last year by 37%. Officers made almost 9% more arrests this year for violent crimes and nearly 25% more total arrests. 3rd Precinct: Overall violent crime was down 24% this week. Officers have made 25% more arrests for violent crime in this year-to-date period. Property crime rose by 18% this week, driven by increases in larceny and auto theft, but remains 2% lower than last year at this time. 4th Precinct: Violent crime totals remain lower by 20% than during this timeframe in 2007. Officers made 40% more arrests for violent crimes this week. Overall property crimes continue to be about 25% lower over last year. 5th Precinct: The number of reported rapes and robberies have increased in this year-to-date period, pushing up the overall violent crime rate almost 2% higher than 2007.
