CITYWIDE TRENDS

The MPLS total violent crime rate continues to be lower than last year by 13%.

MPLS has had 13 homicides this year to date. This is a 43% decrease from 23 homicides at this time in 2007.

Robberies decreased by 46% this week. The year-to-date decrease is

14% compared to 2007.

Aggravated assaults are 11% lower in this year-to-date period.

Rape has decreased by 13% this year.

Total property crimes decreased by 12% in this year period.

331 weapons have been placed into evidence this year, 12 this week.

29^th St/Central Av NE: Officers dispatched to gas station on Unknown Trouble call, learned 3 men had argued with clerk, 1 man then punched clerk; reports have been filed recently from same location regarding these same 3 suspects for similar incidents; officers reviewed store videotape, observed incident; officers searched area, found 1 of 3 who called other 2 to scene; 2 were juveniles; all cited, released: ASSAULT

22^nd/Park Av S: Officers answering Shots fired call, learned Abbott Hosp security came in contact with gunshot victim at 22^nd/Park; treated, released; K9 stopped suspect matching description in area; another victim located in 2000 blk Portland Av S with gunshot wound to leg, arm; bullet, casings found at scene; vehicle parked at this scene had window shot out; victim with 2 GSWs had significant amount crack cocaine, cash on him; initial witness reports conflicting; victim uncooperative

900 blk Broadway: Officer responded to call reporting gang members, brandishing gun in SUV at 23^rd/

Lyndale; officers observed vehicle in store parking lot, search recovered 38 revolver, 357 semi-auto 4 squads, Gang Force responded: 5 Arrested/ WEAPON (aged 16-18, all with extensive previous arrest record)

Victim called 911, reported boyfriend with history of mental illness threatened to shoot her; squads arrived, located suspect, gun sent to property inventory for safekeeping because victim did not want gun in apt

Investigating: ROBBERY of BUSINESS: 500 blk Hennepin Av: Parking lot attendant approached by 3 suspects, 2 with handguns, they demanded cash; victim cooperated, suspects fled toward Nicollet Mall; video obtained

Charged: ROBBERY of BUSINESS: 3100 blk Chicago Av: 2 armed suspects entered convenience store, demanded cash, fled in car, but were spotted speeding away by officers several blocks from crime scene; officers stopped vehicle, detained 3 suspects; victim returned to scene, picked out suspects in field show-up; loss was recovered in car, all 3 charged with Aggravated Robbery

Investigating: AGRAVATED ROBBERY: 11^th/Hawthorne Av: Victim visiting girlfriend in downtown , dropped her off, got asked for directions from man loitering outside Greyhound Bus Depot; man pulled out handgun, robbed victim of car, then sped off lost control, struck tree, critically injuring self; suspect taken to HCMC

Traffic Unit: Officers made 581 stops, issued 635 citations, made 67 arrests; officers also investigated 18 accidents, 6 squad accidents: Motorcycle Officers made 112 stops, issued 120 citations, made 5 arrests; investigated 1 accident

Bomb Unit: Sgt gave presentation to Municipal Building Commission Security Staff along with Security staff from Hennepin Co Govt Center, other select employees on bomb threat searches and suspicious packages

K9: K9 officer observed stolen vehicle at 25^th/Aldrich Av N, suspect booked into HCJ; K9 team assisted 3^rd Pct officers chasing burglary suspect in area of 27^th/Portland Av S, K9 tracked, flushed the suspect, perimeter officers took suspect into custody; Explosives-trained K9 team assisted St Paul PD with explosives sweep of Excel Center prior to Obama’s visit; K9 team responded to burglary in progress in 4^th Pct, K9 located suspect in alley, he surrendered without incident; K9 officer observed occupied stolen vehicle at 30^th/Fremont Av N, 4 suspects booked for auto theft/narcotics

1^st Precinct: Overall violent crimes dropped significantly this week, down by 52% over this time last year. Year-to-date violent crime rates remain lower, now by 23% over 2007. A 21% increase in larceny and one additional case of arson is driving up property crime totals by 10% for this year compared to 2007.

2^nd Precinct: Total violent crime is among the lowest in the City this week. Down by 59% over 2007, violent crime totals continue to trend downward with one exception: there have two more cases of rape reported this year. Property crimes are still lower this week and for the year by 33%, but there were two more cases of Auto Theft this week.

3^rd Precinct: Violent crime totals have fallen 1% compared with this time in 2007 for the year, but have been on the rise this week. There were 5 cases of rape reported this week and 26 cases of aggravated assault. Property crime rates rose this week in almost all categories and by 10% overall. Officers noted a several explosions this week in the W River Pkwy/Lake area. Similar explosions have been reported in this area for the last few years. Investigators are working hard to identify the source.

4^th Precinct: The reduction in the violent crime rate remains steadily lower this week compared to 2007 and this year to date; violent crime is down 28% this week and 18% for the year. Property crime rates remain on average 21% lower for the week and for the year.

5^th Precinct: Violent crime rates fell sharply this week by 54%, keeping the year-to-date totals 2% lower than 2007. Property crimes have decreased by 26% this week
