MPD HIGHLIGHTS for the week of 1-7 July, 2008
CITYWIDE TRENDS The MPLS total violent crime rate continues to be lower than last year by 15%.
MPLS has had 18 homicides this year to date. This is a 31% decrease from 26 homicides at this time in 2007. Robberies decreased by 26% this week. The year-to-date decrease is 18% compared to 2007. Aggravated assaults were 10% lower in this year-to-date period. Rape has decreased by 15% this year. Total property crimes decreased by 8% in this year period. 441 weapons have been placed into evidence this year, 15 this week. |

Investigating: Source for drug distribution in MPLS; source drives to Southwest US several times/ month, obtains large quantity of methamphetamine, returns to Mpls for distribution in Hennepin Co; MPD obtained court order to allow tracking on vehicle, ongoing case with HCSO, interdiction planned Investigating: MPD officer undercover with major heroin crew, has made number of buys; crew uses dispatch system--customer calls dispatcher, places order, runner sent to customer’s location, ongoing investigation with HCSO Narcotics Investigating: Large marijuana grow operation in northern suburbs area, determined that majority of distribution customers are in Northeast Minneapolis - ongoing investigation with the DEA. Investigating: Participated in joint saturation detail in 3rd Precinct, with special emphasis on known high crime areas, MSGT, US Marshals, HCCC, DOC joined with 3rd Pct CRT team who provided oversight; resulted in recovery of 3 guns, 5 felony, 39 misdemeanor, 1 parole violation arrests; additional intelligence developed on numerous gang members in area, saturation officers also responded to various calls | ||||

1st Precinct: Violent crime totals remain 25% lower for the week and 22% for the year. Robbery rose slightly this week; 9 robberies were reported this week compared with 6 in 2007. Property crimes overall rose by 63% this week and by 12% this year. Increases in burglary, larceny and auto theft accounted for the category-wide increase. 2nd Precinct: Violent crime fell significantly by 44% this week and remains 27% lower than in 2007. Total property crime averages 30% lower for the week and for the year; auto theft is the only category with an increase this week there were 8 in comparison to 7 in 2007. 3rd Precinct: Total violent crime is 46& lower this week over this week in 2007 and it is 7% lower thus far this year. Property crime saw an increase this week driven by higher incidents of burglary.
4th Precinct: Overall violent crime fell 29% this week and 18% in the year-to-date period. Property crime remains lower by 15% compared to 2007. 5th Precinct: Total violent crime fell by 18% this week and is 9% lower than at this time last year.
