MPD HIGHLIGHTS for the week of 2-8 September, 2008
CITYWIDE TRENDS The MPLS total violent crime rate continues to be lower than last year by 12%.
MPLS has had 27 homicides this year to date. This is a 21% decrease from 34 homicides at this time in 2007. Robberies have decreased by 16% this year over last. Aggravated assaults are 9% lower in this year-to-date period. Rape has decreased by 17% this year. Total property crimes decreased by 8% in this year period. 609 weapons have been placed into evidence this year, 10 this week. |

24th/Lyndale Avs S: Homeless victim found on ground next to Grocery Store at 24th and Lyndale Ave S; reported by victim’s girlfriend; both victim, girlfriend very uncooperative with officers; victim suffered 8 stab wounds to upper torso, cut wrists; victim was in stable condition; no suspect information CID investigating | |
200 blk 11th St S: Officers responded to hotel on theft report; male victim stated he met female at bar, brought her back to hotel room; victim reported suspect made victim drinks, told him to get undressed, which is last thing he remembers; upon waking, victim discovered money, jewelry gone; total loss over $120k CID investigating |
15 Av/2nd St NE: While working Robbery Suppression detail in unmarked squad, Officers observed male, approx 17-23 yrs old, wearing white “hoodie”, riding bike; fled on bike, then on foot when officers approached him; later in the early morning, officers observed suspicious person at 22nd/3rd Sts NE, checked on him, discovered he has felony warrant for Arrested/DAMAGE to PROPERTY Precinct investigating |
00 blk th S: Lone male was confronted by 4 native males near 26th/Cedar. Suspect pulled a gun and forced it into victim’s mouth and pulled the trigger. Charged: Criminal charges have been filed in 29 Aug shooting death of Darius Ormond Miller that occurred outside of Whispers bar located at 418 3rd Ave N; Jerrell Michael Brown (6/7/87) has been charged with MURDER; According to the complaint, numerous parties were assaulting Miller on landing in front of Whispers Bar when Brown came from across the street, approached Miller, shot him once in the head. Brown then left the scene, later apprehended. Homicide investigators interviewed numerous witnesses, watched several hours of surveillance video before they were able to bring these charges forward; Brown is being held in custody at the Hennepin County Adult Detention Facility; bail has been set at $1,000,000 | ||||

Investigating: 48 ROBBERY of PERSON, 13 assigned; 22 AGGRAVATED ROBBERY of PERSON; 19 AGGRAVATED ROBBERY of PERSON (including AUTO), 4 assigned; 4 ROBBERY of BUSINESS, 4 cases assigned; 2 cases closed by arrest; 1 case exceptionally cleared; 1 case unfounded; 13 cases transferred to another unit; 15 cases open pending additional information; 8 cases open Pattern: Since 16 Aug there has been a pattern of armed ROBBERIES at convenience stores; 5/6 stores have been in 2nd Precinct; remaining store in 1st Pct; suspect is black male, 35-40, 5’7”, light-medium build, wearing a New York Yankees baseball cap, armed with silver pistol Pattern: Several residents have been robbed in their driveways in Webber Park area; 1 resident shot outside his home in 4100 blk Aldrich Av N; another area resident robbed in parking lot of Camden Liquors; suspect is black male, 18-25, thin build, 6’, armed with semi-automatic handgun Pattern: ROBBERY of BUSINESS: 6000 blk Portland: This is 3rd robbery involving same suspect in past 2 months; same employee is on duty during these robberies; investigation is focused internally | ||||

Predatory Offender Registration: Initiated 2 new cases of Failure to Register; arrested/Non-complaint Predatory Offender; non-compliant offenders ID’d at Hennepin Co Jail; 1 complaint signed; current total non-complaint in Mpls: 171 ; Since 15 Apr, number of non-compliant offenders in Minneapolis has been reduced by 33%; (PORS investigative function was not operational during the RNC) Investigating: 19 cases routed; 9 cases assigned Update: No new cases reported involving “Northside rapist”; high police visibility, community notification may be contributing factor | ||||

1st Precinct: Violent crime overall has fallen 14% this year compared to this time last year. Robbery and aggravated assault decreased significantly this week, by over 70% from 2007. Property crime totals have increased by 8%; a 15% increase larceny is responsible for driving up property crime. 2nd Precinct: Total violent crime remains 20% lower than in 2007, but this week saw an increase in robbery. There have been 24% fewer property crimes overall thus far in 2008. 3rd Precinct: Violent crime totals for this year are 8% lower than at this time in 2007. There have been increases this week in robbery and aggravated assault. Property crime totals overall are 4% lower than in September 2007.
4th Precinct: Total violent crime fell 15% over this time last year. Property crimes have decreased 7% from 2007. 5th Precinct: Both violent crime and property crime totals fell by approximately 9% for this year-to-date period. | |||||
