Rank Structure

Rank is a classification held by a sworn* member of the MPD. Below are all the ranks in the MPD from highest to lowest.

Chief of Police is the highest-ranking sworn position within the MPD. The Chief of Police is appointed by the Mayor and must be confirmed by City Council.

Deputy Chiefs are appointed by the Chief of Police.

Inspectors are appointed by the Chief of Police.

Captain is the highest rank achieved by Civil Service promotion. A Captain manages the operation of a division of the Minneapolis Police Department.

Lieutenant is a sworn supervisor of a unit within a precinct or division of the Minneapolis Police Department.

Investigative Team Leader is a Sergeant-level position selected by the Chief of Police. An Investigative Team Leader assists Lieutenants with assignments and management of cases and other administrative tasks.

Sergeant supervises a number of police officers. A Sergeant must have 5 years of experience with the Minneapolis Police Department.

Police Officer is the initial rank of a recruit hired through the Civil Service employment process.

* What does ‘sworn’ mean?

A sworn member of the Minneapolis Police Department is one who takes an oath to support the constitution of the United States and the State of Minnesota. A sworn member has the authority to make arrests and carry firearms.
