Criminal Investigations Bureau

The Investigative Bureau effectively complements the patrol function by providing investigative expertise and professional case management to maximize the successful prosecution of criminals.

Criminal Investigations Division

The Criminal Investigations Division is comprised of the following units, focusing on crimes against persons:

Robbery Unit: The Robbery Unit investigates cases involving adult suspects for the crimes of robbery.

Family Violence Unit: The Family Violence Unit investigates cases involving adult suspects and adult victims for the crimes of domestic assault. The unit shall handle adult protection referrals. In addition, the Family Violence Units investigates cases involving adult or juvenile suspects for the crimes of child abuse (physical or sexual abuse), neglect and parental kidnapping.

Sex Crimes Unit: The Sex Crimes Unit investigates cases involving adult and most juvenile suspects for the crimes of sexual assault, non-familial child molestation, indecent exposure, luring and stalking cases other than domestic related. The Unit also maintains a database file on registered sex offenders.

Forgery/Fraud Unit: The Forgery/Fraud function investigates cases involving adult suspects in the crimes of forgery, fraud, use of worthless checks, misuse of credit cards, counterfeiting and embezzlement.

Special Investigations Division

The Special Investigations Division, organized to reflect the department's commitment to the suppression of organized crime, vice, organized gang and related criminal activities, is comprised of the following units:

Assault Unit: The Assault Unit investigates felony level assaults which include aggravated assaults, assaults with weapons, and terroristic threats.

Homicide Unit: The Homicide Unit investigates cases involving adult and juvenile suspects for the crimes of murder and manslaughter. This Unit also investigates deaths reported to the police, suicides and attempted suicides, drug or narcotic overdoses, non-vehicular accidents and non-parental kidnappings and assaults that are not domestic related.

Juvenile Unit: The Juvenile Investigative Unit investigates criminal cases involving juvenile offenders, and any complaints involving adults suspected of contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile, except arson, child abuse, homicide, felony sex and some crack/narcotic cases. This Unit also maintains files on runaway and missing juveniles.

Narcotics Unit: The Narcotics Unit investigates cases involving adult suspects for the illegal selling, buying and possession of dangerous drugs or narcotics for mid and upper level drug distribution enforcement. The unit assigns officers to work with the local Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA) Task Force investigating federal narcotics cases in the metropolitan area. The Unit also liaisons with the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) Task Force to investigate narcotics cases involving illegal firearms violations.

Bomb/Arson Unit: The Bomb/Arson Unit investigates cases involving fires of suspicious origins, suspected explosive devices, actual explosives and bomb threats. The Unit recovers and safely disposes of military ordnance, illegal fireworks and hazardous explosive chemicals. The Unit may also serve as initial investigative consultants for environmental crimes.
