The Minneapolis Police Department is committed to professional development of its officers, from beginning as a new recruit to developing a rewarding career in law enforcement.
The initial training process for recruits includes an orientation school, Police Academy, and a field training program. Learn more about the Police Academy.
Field Training Officers (FTO) Program
Recruits must pass the orientation school requirements prior to admission to the FTO program.
The FTO program is designed to bridge the gap between academic setting and field experience. Recruit officers work one-on-one with a training officer during a six month period. The program serves as the final step in the officer selection process. Recruits must pass the Training Unit's orientation school requirements prior to admission to the FTO program. FTO program requirements must be satisfactorily completed before the end of the recruit's probationary period.
Professional Development Programs
MPD has a Training Unit that runs the professional development program to promote the professional growth of all MPD employees. The program includes:
- Career path counseling
- Career enrichment programs
- Higher education tuition reimbursement
- In-service training
- Community service
MPD In-Service Training
MPD In-Service Training is provided each year to meet or exceed the requirements of the Minnesota Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). Specialized training for all employees will be provided as the need arises.
Department employees scheduled for in-service training are required to attend and participate. Sworn officers attend and participate in in-service training, as assigned, regardless of the number of POST credits accumulated.
External Schools and Seminars
Officers may be selected to attend or teach advanced training programs in which the MPD participates. MPD employees may attend specialized training sessions on their own time or apply to attend training while on duty, or special duty time.
