Construction is now under way at the Hiawatha Public Works Facility, which – when completed – will be the first City project designed and constructed in compliance with Resolution 2006R-381, adopted by the Minneapolis City Council and Mayor Rybak. The resolution adopted LEED standards for planning, design, construction and commissioning of all municipal facilities financed by the City, with a goal that the Hiawatha facility be LEED Gold Certified.

The Hiawatha facility project involves redevelopment, new construction, and demolition of buildings and structures on the City-owned 9.02-acre Public Works site located at East 26th Street and Hiawatha Avenue South. The Hiawatha facility’s LEED features include several environmentally responsible and money saving systems. Energy-efficient systems include geothermal heating and cooling and a white roof. The facility also incorporates systems to recover energy, reuse the existing materials on the site, control storm water (pervious pavement and underground retention systems) and landscape with native plantings that resist drought. The reconstructed Hiawatha Public Works Facility is scheduled to open in spring 2010.

The facility will provide functional working space for almost 200 employees, including approximately 32,000 square feet of office space, 26,000 square feet of shop and interior storage space and more than 250,000 square feet of yard space. The project will provide office, shop, storage and operational needs for several Minneapolis Public Works divisions, allowing employees and functions to consolidate for more efficiency. What is LEED certification?

LEED is an internationally recognized standard for measuring building sustainability. Achieving LEED certification demonstrates that a building project is truly "green." The LEED rating system offers four certification levels for new construction – Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum – that correspond to the number of credits accrued in five green design categories: sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources and indoor environmental quality.

The City is partnering with the Mississippi Headwaters Chapter, the Minnesota Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council to ensure the LEED certification building standards.
