Commercial Vehicle Permits

The City of Minneapolis requires permits for commercial vehicles. See below for details about when you need this permit, the requirements, and application process.

Permit Requirements

Requirements:

  • The vehicle must be operation under a company which has current motor carrier insurance or appropriate insurance as a private carrier.
  • The vehicle must be properly registered.
  • The vehicle must be used exclusively for the pickup or delivery of merchandise.

Any other use is strictly prohibited and will result in denial of the application or revocation of the permit, such as:

  • Private transportation
  • Service work
  • Delivery of equipment used for service work (e.g. maintenance company dropping off cleaning equipment without attendant in vehicle)
  • Use by salesman for dropping of displays, samples, or to take orders

Permit duration

The permit fee is for a twelve month period. Permits expire on the anniversary date of their issuance. Permits issued prior to the last five working days of each month will be inclusive of that month and the permit will expire one year from the last day of the previous month. Permits issued during the last five working days of each month will be treated as if they were issued on the first day of the following month. Thus, any permit issued during these last five working days of the month will expire one year from the last day of the month in which they were issued.

Fees

Cost of permits are as follows:

  • $400.00 annually (includes up to 5 permits)
  • $20.00 annually for each additional permit
  • $12.00 temporary 30 day permit
  • $11.00 replacement permit

Replacement Permit

Replacement permits will be issued only upon return of the previously issued permit.

Display of permit

Commercial Permits must be permanently affixed to the vehicle. Magnetic attachments of Commercial Permits or decals applied in a manner that allows easy removal will result in suspension of the permit. Permits are to be affixed on each side of the vehicle between the wheel well and the front door at wheel height. All permits numbers must be affixed and correspond to the vehicle license number which appears on the application form when approved.

Other requirements

  • Each vehicle must display the entity for which it is operating. Such identification may be of a temporary nature (magnetic sign, etc.) if professionally produced. This identification must be located on the front door of both sides of the vehicle. Lettering must be 2 to 2 1/2 inches in height.
  • A company must notify the Department of Public Works, Transportation Division when a permit is no longer valid:
