Andersen School Safe Routes Improvements

Andersen School is the city's largest K-8 school with 1194 students. This student population is larger than 4 of the city's 7 MPS high schools. Andersen is bordered to the north and south by 26th & 28th Streets, which are high-volume, multi-lane streets. It also shares a site with Stewart Park.

In 2014 Public Works applied for and was awarded federal TAP dollars to improve pedestrian crossings near the school and to build an enhanced bicycle connection between the Midtown Greenway and the school site. These improvements will serve the school, park, and surrounding Phillips community, as well as employees and visitors to the adjacent hospital campus.

Project Updates

July 9, 2018: Construction is anticipated to be completed in July of 2018.

April 24, 2018: The pedestrian improvements along 26th St E and 28th St E were constructed in summer 2017. The bikeway trail connection on 28th St E will be constructed summer 2018, to provide better two-way bike access between the school and Midtown Greenway. The travel lanes of 28th St E  will be impacted during construction of the trail, though there will be no long-term impact to the travel lanes upon trail completion. The trail will replace the existing on-street bikeway and buffer for one block. The local streets 11th Ave S and 12th Ave S will be marked with bike boulevard symbols as part of this new bikeway connection.
