Ten-Year Sidewalk Inspection Cycle
The Sidewalk Inspections Office of Public Works inspects all city sidewalks on approximately a 10 year cycle.
Prior to the construction season, Sidewalk Inspections selects and inspects neighborhood areas for that year’s sidewalk repair work. Sidewalk inspectors examine every section of public sidewalk within that year’s defined neighborhood areas to determine which sections require replacement.
The sidewalk inspector looks for:
- Damage that could cause pedestrians to fall
- Damage that could impede wheel-chair users and other disabled pedestrians
- Common defects like breaks, unevenness, and projecting or settled sections
If defective, sections of sidewalk are ordered to be removed and replaced. The property owner is sent a notice outlining the defect and the approximate cost for replacement.
If a property owner does not agree with the work as outlined on the notice, he/she may contact the sidewalk inspector for a re-inspection. Upon re-inspection, the inspector may change the scope of the work or determine that the original scope of work was correct.
