Cutting-edge technology brings cleaner water to the city
The ultrafiltration water plant in Columbia Heights is a state-of-the-art facility that makes Minneapolis tap water clean and safe without affecting taste.
The facility process up to 70 million gallons of Mississippi River water per day, removing particles so small that a standard microscope can’t detect them. In fact, the plant will remove impurities more effectively than even federal drinking water standards require.
Next door to the ultrafiltration plant, the original water plant in Columbia Heights serves as a backup facility for the City. Constructed in the early 20 th century, that plant provided clean and safe drinking water to Minneapolis for nearly 90 years.
