Recreational Fires in Minneapolis

Backyard fires, bonfires, or recreational fires can be a great way to enjoy the outdoors. But even small fires have an effect on the environment and your neighbors.

The Fire Department and Fire Inspectors can issue administrative citations for fires that don't follow these rules:

When having a recreational fire, you must keep fire extinguishing equipment--like a garden hose, sand, or a water bucket--nearby and available.

Recreational fires are also not allowed when wind speeds are higher than 10 MPH, or when the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has issued an Air Pollution Health Advisory for Particulate Matter (PM2.5) that includes Minneapolis.

The Fire Department may put out fires that don't follow these rules, which apply to recreational fires, including portable freestanding fireplaces and “chimineas.”
