Why This Is Important

Graffiti is a crime. It has a negative impact on neighborhoods, decreases property values and drives away prospective homebuyers. Graffiti also attracts criminal activity and is frequently used by gang members to promote their gangs. This indicator reports the number of graffiti service requests and the percentage of these service requests abated by the Clean City crews, residents or the building owners within a service level agreement of 20 working days.

What's Being Done

The City is being as aggressive as possible in our removal of gang graffiti. Other categories of graffiti are addressed on a first-reported, first-abated basis. The City of Minneapolis anti-graffiti program involves a number of collaborating City departments, including the Police, Public Works, Regulatory Services and the City Attorney's Office. To solve this problem will require the entire community to do its part.

About This Measure

This chart tracks the number of graffiti service requests and the percentage resolved by City crews, residents or the building owners within the target of 20 working days. This service level was established in July of 2007. A graffiti service request is resolved when the City has either abated the graffiti or handed the case off to another entity, such as the U.S. Postal Service, Xcel Energy or MnDOT, who is responsible for abating graffiti on its property.
