Permit Valuation

Optional Views:

Why This Is Important

The City of Minneapolis has consistently demonstrated an investment in new buildings and remodeling. Typically, construction trends follow economic trends. Although the economy is unpredictable, the valuation year-to-date is $18 million more this year compared to last year. The Orchestra Hall project contributed $39 million in valuation in the second quarter of 2012. This trend indicates that people are still investing in the city, even in times of economic uncertainty. We are beginning to see large projects come through such as apartment buildings and commercial additions. The fees that are generated will be reinvested in the department as well as contributing to the City’s general fund.

What's Being Done

Although this measure is mostly affected by the overall situation of the economy, the City of Minneapolis continues to improve its operations to make it easier to obtain permits and develop properties in the city. Key functions include:

  • Offering development coordination services.
  • Clearly defining roles and responsibilities in relation to development services.
  • Offering concurrent reviews of proposed new buildings.
  • Expanding online permitting services.
  • Expanding the Customer Service Center for direct contact with a staff member from several departments (Housing, Problem Properties Unit, Minneapolis Development Review, Plan Review, Zoning, Community Planning and Economic Development, etc.).

About This Measure

The valuation of a building permit includes the total construction costs, which include building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and labor. The source of information is the City of Minneapolis' KIVA land management system.
