Solid Waste & Recycling Statistics
The yearly statistics show the breakdown of all municipal solid waste (MSW) collected by Minneapolis Solid Waste & Recycling. The bottom of each page calculates the recycling rate for that year. The overall percentage of the City’s waste stream that is recycled is calculated as well as the City’s recycling rate. The City’s recycling rate is submitted to Hennepin County each year to show that the City is improving towards meeting goals set by the County. These two different calculations are as follows:
Percent of Waste Stream Recycled Calculation
Waste to Energy + Recycling + Other Recycling + Composted + Landfilled = Total MSW
(Recycling + Other Recycling/Total MSW) X 100 = % of City’s Waste Stream that is Recycled
Recycling Rate Calculation for Hennepin County
Recycling/(Recycling+Waste to Energy) = Recycling Rate
Many other cities utilize a Diversion Rate to express the total amount of material that was not disposed of in a landfill. We use a diversion rate to say how much material was diverted from the garbage waste stream. We do not include Waste to Energy in our diversion rate.
If you have any questions on these calculations, please contact Solid Waste & Recycling at (612) 673-2917 and ask to speak with the Recycling Coordinator.
