Fast Food Containers

Bag and place inside the garbage cart. We do not accept fast food containers in the recycling program.


Used in fast food take-out packaging among other things. It is easy to identify, but very costly to recycle as the nearest recycling plant is now in New Jersey. This is why there are no longer any drop-offs for polystyrene in the Twin Cities.

Do NOT place in the garbage cart. This item NOT collected by Solid Waste & Recycling or accepted at the South Transfer Station. Disposal with garbage is prohibited.

Fiberglass Insulation

Small amounts of fiberglass can be bagged and placed inside the garbage cart. Dry and clean insulation removed during re-modeling can be reused.

Fiberglass is accepted at the South Transfer Station. A voucher is required. Vouchers are for Minneapolis Solid Waste & Recycling customers only. See Voucher Program for details.

South Transfer will NOT accept insulation that contains asbestos. Insulation that contains asbestos is NOT collected by Solid Waste & Recycling. Asbestos can be hazardous to your health and requires careful removal. For additional information, call:

Office Paper and Mail: Office paper, mail, envelops, manila folders, notebook paper, Post-It Notes®. Place in the paper bags. Include with boxboard.

 

Fire Extinguishers

Do NOT place in the garbage cart. This item NOT collected by Solid Waste & Recycling or accepted at the South Transfer Station. Disposal with garbage is prohibited.

Fireplace Ashes

Double bag and place inside the garbage cart. Make sure the ashes have cooled before bagging.

 

Fireworks

DO NOT place in the garbage cart. Not collected or accepted by Solid Waste & Recycling or with a voucher at the South Transfer Station. Disposal with garbage is prohibited. Call your local police precinct or 911 for proper disposal. If you find an item that may be an explosive, do not move it--call 911.

If the item reads: Caution, Caustic, Corrosive, Danger, Flammable, Poison, Volatile, Warning - this would be an indication that it is a Hazardous Waste product and needs proper disposal - Go to Hennepin County A-Z Listing for additional information.

 

Flag, American

Do NOT place in the garbage cart. Contact your local American Legion, who dispose of American Flags with respect, and in the proper manner.

   

Flares

DO NOT place in the garbage cart. Not collected or accepted by Solid Waste & Recycling or with a voucher at the South Transfer Station. Disposal with garbage is prohibited. Call your local police precinct or 911 for proper disposal. If you find an item that may be an explosive, do not move it--call 911.

Flooring

Item accepted at South Transfer Station with a voucher. Vouchers are available to customers of Minneapolis Solid Waste & Recycling, see Voucher Program for details.

Fluorescent Lamps: Non-incandescent

Do NOT place in the garbage cart. This item NOT collected by Solid Waste & Recycling or accepted at the South Transfer Station. Disposal with garbage is prohibited.

Fluorescent lamps (light bulbs) and high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps, and ballasts from fluorescent lamps are banned from solid waste disposal in Minnesota. This includes other non-incandescent lights such as tubes, circles, u-shape, or compact fluorescent bulbs/lights.

Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL) can now be recycled at Menard’s or Home Depot. Only CFL are accepted. It is illegal to throw CFL’s in the garbage due to the presence of a small amount of mercury. Recycling
: Call a nearby retailer or hardware store to see if they accept fluorescent lamps for recycling. Check Xcel Energy's program for participating retailers.

Food Waste

Freezer

This item collected on recycling week only. Doors must be removed for collection. Place next to the garbage cart on the recycling day. Please post a sign or write on the item "For Solid Waste".

Freon

Do NOT place in the garbage cart. This item NOT collected by Solid Waste & Recycling or accepted at the South Transfer Station. Disposal with garbage is prohibited.

Small freon canisters (the size of a small aerosol can) are accepted by Hennepin County at Hennepin County drop off locations.


For larger tanks of freon, call JR's Appliance at (651) 454-9215.

Frozen Food Boxes

Bag and place inside the garbage cart. We do not accept frozen food boxes in the recycling program.

Frozen and refrigerated food boxes can't be recycled because they have a plastic coating.

We wanted to collect as much recycling as possible, but also keep it simple for our customers. Collecting only “Dry food boxes” helps us avoid many problem boxes.

 

Fuel Tanks

Do NOT place in the garbage cart. This item NOT collected by Solid Waste & Recycling or accepted at the South Transfer Station. Disposal with garbage is prohibited.
