Save and use at home to collect your recycling. When full, take our to your recycling cart. Otherwise place in your recycling cart.

Bags, Plastic

Save and reuse or donate to a secondhand store for reuse.

Most grocery stores accept plastic bags and plastic wrap for recycling. Examples of acceptable film plastics include: grocery or retail shopping, dry cleaning, bread, and produce bags; packaging wrap from toilet paper and paper towels; re-sealable zipper bags (remove zipper section); and sealed air bags used for shipping material. Plastic beverage rings are also accepted in plastic bag recycling programs. Contact your local grocery store to see if they accept plastic bags for recycling.

Small pieces can be included with grass clippings and leaves. Place in bags. Each bag must weigh less than 40 lbs. Do not use bags larger than 33 gallons.

State law prohibits disposing of yard waste with the garbage. South Transfer Station does not accept yard waste.

Yard waste collected mid-April through mid-November, weather permitting.

Basketball Hoop

This item collected on recycling week only. Backboard and plastic base or concrete need to be removed from the pole. The pole needs to be cut to sections no longer than 3 feet to be picked up. Limit of 2 large items per recycling week. Place next to the garbage cart on the recycling day. Please post a sign or write on the item "For Solid Waste". Item will be picked up on next business day after recycling day.

Batteries

DO NOT PLACE ANY BATTERY IN GARBAGE CART. ONLY Minneapolis Solid Waste & Recycling customers can place the following batteries on top of their recycling cart for pickup.

How to Recycle:
Tape the positive (+) terminal of lithium ion batteries to prevent fires. Place in a clear plastic bag and place on top of your recycling container.
 
ACCEPTED - Any type of household batteries.
Includes the following chemistries: Alkaline, carbon zinc, gel cell, lithium, lithium ion, mercuric oxide, nickel cadmium, nickel metal hydride, silver oxide, small sealed lead acid, and zinc air.
 
NOT ACCEPTED--Vehicle Lead Acid Batteries. Boat, car, motorcycle, snowmobile, tractor, truck or other vehicle batteries are NOT collected by Solid Waste & Recycling. Disposal with garbage is prohibited.
 
Any retail store that sells lead acid batteries is required by state law to accept and recycle up to five (5) batteries at no charge; no purchase required.
 
The Hennepin County drop-off facilites also accept both household and lead acid batteries: Hennepin County Guide.

Staples, the Office Suprstore, is collecting binders at their stores for recycling through a program with TerraCycle.  If binders are not reusable, bring the to Staples for recycling.  For more information visit TerraCycle's website.

If the book is in good shape, donate to a library, the Goodwill or a secondhand store. We can't recycle books because the binding is not recyclable, and makes the whole book not recyclable.

Box Springs

Brake Fluid

By State law, a person cannot place brake fluid, motor oil, oil filters, power steering fluid, or transmission fluid in the garbage, on the land, in water, down a sewer, or in the storm drain.

Some automotive service stations accept automotive fluids and oil filters, usually for a fee.

Branches must be less than 3 inches in diameter. Bundle securely with twine or rope; do NOT use wire or tape. Bundles must be less than 3 feet in length and weigh less than 40 lbs.
