Cans: Aerosol (Empty)

Only if the can is empty (no liquid or pressure left), may it go in the garbage.
If not empty (still has liquid or pressure left), then Go to Hennepin County A-Z Guide for additional information. Federal law requires treating pressurized cans as a hazardous waste.

Aerosol cans that are not empty may leak or explode during sorting or baling. Also, federal law requires treating pressurized cans as a hazardous waste which adds to costs. Federal law requires treating pressurized cans as a hazardous waste.

Caps

All caps from bottles, cans, containers, etc. can be recycled. Please place the cap back on the bottle and place in recycling cart. See Food, Beverage & Other Container Recycling for more information.

Car Seat, Child or Infant

Please remove all straps and padding and bag as garbage. Place the plastic car seat next to the garbage cart on your garbage pickup day.

Limit of 2 large items per recycling week. Place next to the garbage cart. Please post a sign or write on the item "For Solid Waste".

Automotive car seats are not accepted - Check the Yellow page under "Scrap Metals" or "Junk Yards", for disposal options.

The Recycling Association of Minnesota has a program called REseat that accepts children safety seats and recycles them for a fee. Visit RAM's website for additional information.

Car Wax

Carbon Monoxide Detectors

If the carbon monoxide detector contains a battery, remove the battery. Bag and place inside the garbage cart. Please remember to recycle the battery. Contact the manufacturer to check if there is a take back program.

Cards: Greeting & Holiday

Tear off the fronts of cards and reuse them as postcards or donate to a local organization that reuses greeting cards to make new ones. If unable to reuse or donate, place in recycling cart.

Carpet or Carpet Padding

Place next to the garbage cart on garbage day. Please post a sign or write on the item "For Solid Waste". Limit of 2 rolls per garbage day.

Rolls must not exceed 5 feet in length and must be less than 12 inches in diameter. Each roll must not exceed 40 lbs. Must be rolled and tied with string and/or twine.

Cellular Phones

Do NOT place in the garbage cart. This item NOT collected by Solid Waste & Recycling or accepted at the South Transfer Station. Disposal with garbage is prohibited.

Cellular phones contain hazardous components, and should not be placed in the garbage cart. Hennepin County's HHW & Recycling Drop-Off Facilities will accept for recycling.

If your wireless provider is AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon, the phone and battery can be taken to one of their retail stores for recycling. AT&T will accept all brands of cell phones.

The CALL TO PROTECT campaign collects wireless phones to benefit victims of domestic violence. Proceeds from the sale of phones help fund agencies that fight domestic violence and are also used to support the educational efforts of the Wireless Foundation. Other phones are refurbished and become lifelines for domestic violence victims when faced with an emergency situation. Call (888) 901-SAFE (7233).

Chairs, Recliner

Christmas Lights & Trees

After the holidays, there are several ways to dispose of your lights & tree. The South Transfer Station will NOT accept this item.

Recycle Lights:

Dispose of Christmas Tree: Place alongside garbage cart before 6:00 a.m. on your regular garbage pickup day. If tree is 6 feet or taller, you must cut in half.

Ways to Recycle a Tree Yourself:
Place the tree in the yard or garden for use by birds and other wildlife. The branches provide shelter from strong winds and cold. Food can be supplied by hanging fruit slices, seed cakes, or suet bags on its branches. You can also smear peanut butter and seeds in pine cones and hang them in the tree. Prune off the branches and place the boughs over perennials as winter mulch. Chip the tree and use as mulch around trees, shrubs, or in flower beds.

Clothesline Poles

Cloth Scrap

Cloth scraps are recyclable.  Look for clothing recycling bins in your community.  Organizations like Salvation Army and Usagain have collection bins available throughout the area for you to conveniently drop-off your unwanted textiles.  If they can't be reused they will be recycled.

Clothing

Clothes are recyclable. Drop them off at a thrift store, a donation center, or Look for clothing recycling bins in your community. Organizations like Salvation Army and Usagain have collection bins available throughout the area for you to conveniently drop-off your unwanted textiles. Call and hire a private garbage service or call Solid Waste & Recycling at (612) 673-2917 to set up an appointment to determine if the commercial property is eligible for city service.

Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL)

Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL) can now be recycled at Menards or Home Depot. Only CFL are accepted. It is illegal to throw CFLs in the garbage due to the presence of a small amount of mercury. If an electronic item is still usable, check the Yellow Pages under "Computers" or "Office Machines" that would repair, upgrade or accept the equipment for a trade in. Call a nearby school, non-profit and charitable organizations as they often accept working electronic goods.

Copper Piping

Piping must be less than 6 feet in length and bundled. Bundles not to exceed 40 lbs.

Couches, Sofa, Recliner

NOT Metal or Hide-A-Bed: If the couch/sofa is less than 6 feet in length and less than 50% metal. Place next to the garbage cart on garbage day. Please post a sign or write on the item "For Solid Waste". Limit of 2 large items per garbage day. If over 6 feet, then cut in half and place next to cart.

Metal Frame, Hide-A-Bed or Recliner couches: If the couch/sofa/recliner is less than 6 feet in length and 50% or more metal. Place it next to the garbage cart on recycling day. Please post a sign or write on the item "For Solid Waste". Item will be picked up on next business day after recycling day. Limit 2 large items per recycling week. If over 6 feet, then cut in half and place next to cart.

Creosote, a preservative, makes railroad ties hazardous. Donate to someone interested in reusing railroad ties in a landscaping project. Burnsville Sanitary Landfill accepts railroad ties for a fee. For additional information call (763) 425-3218 or (952) 890-3248.
