Fire Station No. 4

Fire Station #4

Address: 1101 Sixth St. N.
Number of panels: 54 solar photovoltaic
Size: 13.2 kilowatts (kW)
Cost: $74,763(no rebates)
Annual Savings: $1,000 - $1,500
Completed: December 2012

Fifty-four solar electric panels were installed on Fire Station 4 in downtown Minneapolis in the fall of 2012. The system will provide 13.2 kilowatts of solar electric power - about 20% of the building's annual electric needs. The array consists of 54 Sunviva Optimus USA-made panels which were installed by Energy Concepts out of Hudson, Wisconsin. In an average year the grid-tied system is expected to produce 17,000 kWh of electricity and save the city up to $1,500 in electricity costs. This project, along with eight others installed along the Energy Innovation Corridor on publicly owned buildings in Minneapolis, was funded by a grant from the US Department of Energy and the Minnesota Department of Commerce through the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA) of 2009. This solar installation- together with six others on City of Minneapolis buildings and one University of Minnesota building on the Energy Innovation Corridor- will save nearly $900,000 in energy costs over their 30-year lifetimes and 5,550 metric tons of carbon dioxide pollution over the same period.

Operating Savings: This system provides about 20 percent of the building’s annual electricity needs will save the City of Minneapolis between $1,000 and $1,500 in electricity costs per year.

Energy Savings: The 13.2 kW system will provide about 17,000 kWh of energy annually.

Carbon Savings: Every year this array will prevent nine metric tons of carbon dioxide pollution.

Community Economic Benefits: This solar project is one of nine in the Energy Innovation Corridor, made possible by the city of Minneapolis and Federal Stimulus funds. These projects are providing jobs in the local clean energy sector, while helping promote the viability of solar energy production in Minnesota.
