Empowerment Zone seeks proposals to spur private development in North Minneapolis

Contact: Matt Laible , Communications Department, (612) 673-2786

The Minneapolis Empowerment Zone (EZ) is releasing a $1 million Request For Proposals (RFP) to spur private investment in four areas of North Minneapolis: Penn and Glenwood avenues, West Broadway and Penn avenues, Penn and Lowry avenues, and West Broadway and Lyndale avenues.

Selected proposals will focus on commercial development, site preparation, large business expansion and recruitment for employment opportunities. The EZ plans to commit at least $200,000 to each approved proposal. Approved projects must provide a one-to-one match of funds.

The Minneapolis Empowerment Zone is one of 15 round II urban zones designated in 1999 by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Its mission is to support the creation of healthy and sustainable communities through economic development and community based service links.

Proposals are due by 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2005.
