The 70,000 square feet Royalston Maintenance Facility was built to consolidate several shops scattered throughout the city. With 31 repair bays and 125 vehicle lifts, the combined shop services the City’s police and light-fleet vehicles. The facility is also home to a paint shop, plumbing shop, carpentry shop, electrical shop, bricklayers shop, ramp maintenance, custodial services, and administrative offices. Natural day lighting throughout the facility add to a pleasant work environment while reducing electrical use.

Royalston’s photovoltaic system is in the marshalling yard of the maintenance facility. It faces due south, with an unobstructed view of the southerly sky. The system consists of 16 165-watt photovoltaic cells that are designed to generate approximately 2.6 kW of electrical power. The array is mounted on a mast arm that automatically adjusts to the sun in the morning and tracks its path throughout the day. This system was furnished and installed for a cost of $35,000. It was completed in January, 2006.
