We're transforming
DOWNTOWN

Minneapolis is undergoing a major transformation in the way you get into and around Downtown. New transit lanes, more two-way streets, new rail lines, and biking and walking improvements are changing how everyone experiences the heart of the city.

  1. By fall 2009, Marquette and 2nd Avenues will be reconstructed to create better transit access and wider, greener sidewalks.
  2. Hennepin Avenue and 1st and 2nd Avenues North will be converted to two-way streets in late 2009, with new bike lanes on 1st Avenue.
  3. Fewer, quieter buses on Nicollet Mall will make shopping and dining on the Mall an even better experience beginning in early 2010.
  4. New rail lines will begin operating in late 2009, including Northstar Commuter Rail and an extension of the Hiawatha Light Rail Line.
  5. The Hiawatha LRT Bicycle Trail will be extended into Downtown to connect with 3rd and 4th streets, beginning in 2010.
  6. Starting in 2010, a Convention Center gateway will improve the streetscape along 13th Street between the Convention Center and Nicollet Mall.
  7. 3rd Avenue North and 2nd Avenue North — 3rd Avenue North from Washington Avenue to 5th Street and 2nd Avenue North from Washington Avenue to 3rd Street are being reconstructed in 2009.
