The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program is a community based training program sponsored by the Minneapolis Fire Department. It is designed to increase communities’ capacity to respond to emergency situations, in coordination with professional responders, such as the fire and police departments. Whether it is severe weather or other emergency situations, through the training, CERT members learn how to prepare themselves and their families to weather the storm. It also provides citizens with the tools to help their neighbors and their community safely and effectively.

Sponsored a the federal levelly by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), this is a hands-on course where volunteers learn the basics of disaster preparedness, fire safety and fire extinguisher use, emergency first aid and triage, light search and rescue, and much more.

Council Member Lane has taken this training and found it to be extremely valuable, so much so that he also became certified to teach this course. He encourages residents to consider registering for the training. If you would like to learn more about CERT, we encourage residents to visit FEMAs CERT website, http://www.citizencorps.gov/programs/cert.shtm .

In partnership with FEMA and the Minneapolis Fire Department (MFD), Council Member Lane is committed to deploying CERT in Southwest Minneapolis. He hopes to have a trained team in each of the six Ward Thirteen neighborhoods by the end of 2005.
