Flea Markets: Time to end the ban?

fleamarketsA sixty-year ban on flea markets in Minneapolis may soon end, if legislation introduced by Council Member Gary Schiff is approved. "The struggling economy, the popularity of shopping local, and the desire to create a sustainable community through the reuse of consumer products is leading to increased popularity of flea markets across the country." said Council Member Schiff.

The Minneapolis City Council will vote on the ordinance later this year. Changes will take place in time for the 2013 season. Flea markets will be regulated similarly to Farmer's Markets, said Schiff. A license will be required for each market, with spaces for individual vendors. The legislation would allow flea markets on parking lots in commercial areas. For more information and upcoming public hearings, check out the
Minneapolis flea markets Facebook page.
