The City Council approved a resolution this morning recognizing June as Immigrant Heritage Month and Sunday, June 20 as World Refugee Day. More than 63,000 people who live in Minneapolis were born outside of the United States, including an estimated 20,000 refugee residents from countries around the world.
“Immigrant Heritage Month offers opportunities to recognize the accomplishments and contributions that immigrants and their families have made in shaping our nation’s history, enriching this country’s culture, and contributing to the economy and success of the United States,” the resolution notes. “[World Refugee Day] is an opportunity to recognize and acknowledge the strength and resilience of refugees who have fled conflict and persecution in their home countries in hopes of reaching sanctuary and a better life in the United States.”
The top five countries of origin for immigrants and refugees in Minneapolis in 2019 were Somalia, Mexico, Ethiopia, Ecuador, and India, according to a New American Economy report presented to a Council committee Wednesday. The comprehensive report also highlights the community’s economic contributions, indicating that immigrants and refugees in the city earned approximately $1.7 billion in total household income in 2019, contributing $159 million to state and local taxes and $284.8 million to federal taxes.
