Getting hired

Our process takes some time. See the steps.
Step 1

Attend an information session

We host a series of information sessions.

Anyone interested in becoming a firefighter can attend.

This step is not required.

Step 2

Apply for a job

Firefighter jobs are posted.

You can submit an application.

Sign up to receive firefighter job alerts.

Step 3

Application review, selection, and CPAT testing

We review all applications.

We invite select applicants to take part in:

  • A Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) orientation
  • Up to two CPAT practice sessions
  • The CPAT exam

If you pass the CPAT, you become a certified-eligible fire cadet.

The certification is good for two years.

Learn more about the CPAT

Step 4

Take part in an oral exam

We invite certified-eligible fire cadets to take part in a behavioral-based interview.

After the interview, you may receive a conditional job offer.

Step 5

Background checks and pre-employment tests

If you accept a conditional job offer, we

  • Conduct a background check on you
  • Ask you to take pre-employment tests

If your background check and pre-employment test results meet our employment criteria, we will make a final job offer.

Step 6

Minneapolis Fire Cadet Academy

Newly hired cadets attend the Minneapolis Fire Cadet Academy training program.

The program lasts three to four months.

You are paid while you are going through training.

When you graduate from the Academy, you become a City of Minneapolis firefighter.
