Barbeque grills

Our regulations and safety tips will help you grill safely.

Grilling safety tips

Before you grill

  • Have an approved, working fire extinguisher nearby, and know how to use it.
  • Do not store liquefied petroleum cylinders inside buildings or on balconies.
  • Keep matches, lighters and combustible liquids away from children.

While grilling

  • Watch over your grill regularly when cooking, and keep the lid closed.
  • Make sure an adult is in charge at all times when using a grill.

Tips by type of grill

Charcoal grills

  • If you live in a multifamily building, ask building management for advice about using a charcoal grill.

Natural gas grills

  • Make sure your natural gas grill connects directly into your building’s natural gas supply. Also make sure it has a shutoff within six feet of the appliance.
  • Use only one-pound cylinders of liquefied petroleum gas and similar gasses.
  • Keep your grill at least 15 feet away from other objects.

Electric grills

  • Make sure your electric grill plugs into or has an approved outlet built into it.
  • Fasten your grill securely to prevent tipping.
  • Keep your grill at least 18 inches away from combustible materials.
