When you buy property

If you buy property that's not exempt from tax, be prepared to pay property taxes. A property's tax status does not change the year you buy it.

  • If you buy in the first half of the year (Jan. 1 - June 30), you will need to pay all the taxes that are due that year. You have until December 31st to apply for an exemption for the current year.
  • If you buy in the second half of the year (July 1 - Dec. 31), you will need to pay all the taxes that are due that year and the next year. Your property will not be eligible for an exemption until the next year. You should apply for an exemption by February 1.
