Immigrant and refugee affairs

Minneapolis is a welcoming city. We believe that all people, including immigrants, are valuable contributors to society. Every resident is vital to the success of our communities and shared future.

Immigrant and Refugee Affairs

In 2018, Minneapolis created the Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs — the first in the state — and appointed Director Michelle Rivero. Immigrant and Refugee Affairs provides guidance on immigration and refugee issues to elected leaders, policy makers and City staff.

Director Rivero also works with the City’s Intergovernmental Relations department to coordinate and promote the City’s legislative priorities on immigration-related matters.

Municipal ID

The Mayor’s office has a number of key responsibilities, which include ensuring Minneapolis residents' safety and health as well as their sense of belonging. To help safeguard residents, we are developing a City ID program with the help of public and private partnerships and community input.
