Food access

Learn how zoning rule changes can make it easier to grow, make, sell and get healthy food.

Overview

The City is updating zoning rules to make it easier for people in Minneapolis to get healthy food. The changes may include many points in the food cycle, such as rules for:

  • Raised planting beds at residential properties
  • Food at institutions, such as schools, parks and community centers
  • Food lockers
  • Food businesses, including local farmers, grocery stores, restaurants, and food trucks
  • Small-scale food production and distribution
  • Composting in neighborhoods

Goals of the amendment

We want to make it easier for people to grow, make, distribute and access affordable, healthy food that fits their culture. To do that, we’ll look at what has made food access harder in the past and what still affects it today.
