Project overview

The proposed project will rebuild a little over half a mile of 7th St N between 10th St N and E Lyndale Ave N. Right now the street has sidewalks on both sides, four lanes for cars, and bike lanes. There are also raised medians or center turn lanes in some parts. Next to the street, there are different types of buildings like stores, government buildings, and houses.
The whole street will be rebuilt, including:

• new sidewalks
• ADA compliant curb ramps
• new pedestrian-scale lighting
• possibly upgrades to the existing bicycle facilities

The project will also include new traffic lights and signs, and new markings on the road, as needed.

The City will ask the community for ideas on how to make the road safer for everyone. These changes will be determined through a process that includes community engagement. This work will help support the new Metro Transit’s D-Line arterial bus rapid transit network.

Project purpose

This project will improve the street for all people in all the ways they move around. The part of 7th Street North was built between 1969 and 1991. The City measured the pavement condition in 2021 and it was rated "poor", and it will keep getting worse until the road is rebuilt. This project will make the road better for people who walk, bike, and drive.
This project also gives us a chance to build and improve: 

• ADA compliant curb ramps
• fix narrow sidewalks
• add new pedestrian-scale lighting
• possible upgrade to existing bicycle facilities

The City will ask the community for ideas on how to make the road safer for everyone. These changes will be determined through a process that includes:

• preliminary planning
• a detailed design
• community engagement

This road has about 60 to 140 people walking, 110 to 160 people biking, and between 8,225 and 10,650 people driving per day. This street is identified in the City’s Vision Zero Action Plan as a High Injury Street. Improvements are needed to eliminate crashes that result in severe injuries and deaths.
