Program overview

In 2018, we worked with Minneapolis Public Schools to create a Safe Routes to School plan for Whittier International Elementary School (WIES). The City used the plan to apply for a grant from the Minnesota Department of Transportation to get funding for this project.

The school is on W. 26th street.

The plan includes two intersections near the school:

  • Grand Avenue S & 26th Street W
  • Blaisdell Avenue S & 27th Street W

Beginning the week of July 11, 2022, the City will install:

  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant ramps
  • Curb extensions
  • pedestrian refuge medians
  • Signage
  • Enhanced pavement markings

Contractor will be paving on Saturday, August 6, 2022, at Grand Avenue and 26th Street starting at 7am.
