Council committees

The City Council uses a committee system to consider legislative policy. Each committee handles a specific area of City policy. Committees recommend actions to City Council for final approval.

Overview

The City Council operates with a system of standing committees. Almost all matters acted on by City Council are first referred to a committee for its input.

Committees revise proposals and forward their recommendations to the full Council. On certain items, they may take input from the public. Their recommendations often becomes the basis for final action by the Council.

The standing committees meet during the two-week period prior to each regular meeting of the full City Council. This two-week period is referred to as the “Council cycle.”
