About Open Streets Minneapolis

Open Streets Minneapolis transforms major City streets into car-free places for one day. Open Streets are events that:

  • Occur on a street for a limited amount of time
  • Shut down car traffic during the event
  • Allow people to walk, bike, and roll down the street
  • Have programming and free activities

Open Streets events do not have a designated beginning or endpoint. Events take place on major business and commercial corridors. These events encourage visitors to discover businesses, parks, and activities along the route.

Attendance numbers

In 2022, a total of 102,000 people attended five Open Streets Minneapolis events. Since 2011, there have been 59 Open Streets Minneapolis events.

What's next in 2024

  • The City is planning on hosting a series of Open Streets events in 2024.
  • Five routes have been selected for 2024: West Broadway, Lyndale Ave S, Northeast, Nicollet, and Franklin.
  • We are looking for community partners to organize Open Streets events. The City put out a Request for Proposals (RFP) for local organizations to host up to 2 Open Streets events in the summer of 2024. This RFP closes on February 15th. A pre-proposal conference is being held on January 31st. For more info, click here.
  • Stay tuned for a schedule of events for summer 2024.
  • We hope to see you out on the street this summer!
